Premium Product Manufactured in Germany, Honestly Priced.
The flap disc was invented in the 1970’s in Germany. Since then, flap discs have continued to increase in use in lieu of traditional grinding wheels and resin fiber discs. Flap disc popularity has increased because they grind and finish material in a single step, thus saving time and money. Today, there are specific flap discs for each application, and it is critical to match the correct disc to the specific task at hand.
Product Features:
- Provides maximum contact with work surface
- Excels in the use of applications on steel
- Best for blending and finishing applications (Type 27)
- Works well on curves and contours
- Normally operated at a 15° to 25° angle
- Use on a Right Angle Grinder
- Grind and finish in a single step
- VSM ZK765X Coated Abrasive Flaps
Advantages of Using Flap Discs
- Grind and Finish: Flap discs allow you to perform heavy stock removal and fine finishing with a single tool by simply varying the pressure.
- Less Downtime: Because they handle multiple stages of a project, you spend less time switching between different discs or tools
- Reduced Gouging: The flexible, layered construction provides a "cushioned" feel that makes it much harder to accidentally gouge or damage the workpiece compared to rigid grinding wheels.
- Smoother Finish: They leave a more uniform, "circular" scratch pattern that is easier to paint over or polish.
- Cooler Cutting: The airflow between the flaps helps dissipate heat, which prevents heat-related discoloration (bluing) or warping on sensitive materials like stainless steel and aluminum.
- Lower Vibration: Because they are less rigid than solid wheels, they generate significantly less vibration, reducing operator fatigue during long shifts.
- Quieter Operation: The layered design naturally muffles the noise produced during grinding.
- Ease of Control: They are more forgiving for less-skilled operators, offering a larger "margin of error" and better overall maneuverability
- Longer Lifespan: As the outer layer of the flaps wears down, fresh abrasive grains are constantly exposed, allowing the disc to maintain a consistent cut rate until it is almost completely worn to the backing.
- Reduced Rework: The smoother finish and controlled material removal mean there is less need for secondary sanding or repair work.
All Flap Discs are not the same. Questions to ask your flap disc supplier.
- Where are the flap discs made. If the answer is China, beware as the product is inferior and most likely made with poor working and environmental conditions.
- What material is used for the coated abrasive flaps. The best material for flap discs is VSM German made coated abrasives.
- Should I use a different flap disc for different materials such as steel, stainless steel and aluminum. If they do not know the answer find another supplier. There are specific flap discs which excel for each material.
- And of course price. If they are charging over $2.00 for a 4-1/2" standard Flap Disc they are overcharging you based on the cost to produce this product in the USA or Europe using premium materials.
